As human beings, we see the world through meanings that exist in our heads. We have a circular paradoxical relationship with these meanings, as we maintain them as they shape the way we live, think, and act.

Do we choose meaning or do meanings choose us? Both, I suppose.
we cannot choose meanings that are attached to certain objects in our mind because these meanings come from other people (macropower) or from circumstances beyond our control. I cannot choose not to have flying associated with disaster. But I can choose what meanings to focus on. In case of flying, I have in my mind flying=disaster and flying=adventure. I can choose to focus on (1) the fact that both these meanings are not natural and absolute and (2) the second meaning.
